Freedom of Information Resources


For journalists, access to information is crucial. Here are resources on freedom of information compiled by the FOI Committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

American Society of Newspaper Editors and its FOI Committee have published a booklet on protecting freedom of information in the digital era. Copies of the booklet are available for $8 each from the ASNE Foundation, Publications Fulfillment, 11690B Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA 20191-1409. Add $5 for shipping and handling. ASNE's Web site has a First Amendment section.

Freedom Forum First Amendment Center This site includes research materials, a calendar of FOI and First Amendment events and news and commentary on First Amendment issues.

Investigative Reporters and Editors FOI Page Tip sheets, a database of FOI cases and columns from the IRE Journal are available on this site. Some content is for IRE members only.

Society of Professional Journalists This site contains an FOIA section.

The Freedom of Information Center is a reference and research library at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

The National Freedom of Information Coalition This site contains links to state FOI or First Amendment organizations and resource links to government and other FOI groups. Members to its listserv exchange news and views on FOI issues.

The Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press has a toll-free hot line (1-800-336-4243) for FOI advice. Its Web site has articles and a sample FOI request letter.

U.S. Department of Justice FOIA Guide This includes guidelines for agency compliance with FOIA and instructions on making FOI requests. The guide also includes a list of FOI contacts by agency with links to agency FOI Web sites.

User's Guide to the Freedom of Information Act This site is a comprehensive look at FOIA and federal privacy act from the U.S. House Committee on Government Operations.
