LaShinda Clark

Moving up… LaShinda Clark (Summer 1995) writes that she has been promoted to photo editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Clark asks, “Keep me in prayer as I tackle this grand mission.”

Awards… Jenny Espino (Summer 2001) and two other reporters from The Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis., were runners-up for Gannett’s Third Quarter Well Done Contest in the First Amendment: Investigative Reporting category for a story involving state and national Ms. Wheelchair pageants and a Florida law firm.

Sholnn Freeman

Moving on… Sholnn Freeman (Summer 1996) is now a business reporter for The Washington Post. Previously, he was a business reporter for the Detroit bureau of The Wall Street Journal, where he had covered the auto industry since 1999. Says Freeman, “After six years in Detroit, The Washington Post came knocking with a great offer. …The auto-industry beat is all mine here at the Post. It's a great opportunity to grow and build on the things I already know.” He joins alums Michael Lee (Summer 1997), Chandra Washington (Summer 1994), Krissah Williams (Summer 1999) and Kiristin Reid (Summer 2005) at the Post.

Jose Corona (Summer 2001) is a general-assignment reporter for The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash. He joins Amy McFall Prince (Summer 2000), a features reporter there. Previously, Corona worked for Wells Fargo Bank.

Angela Manese-Lee (Summer 2003) is a business reporter for The Roanoke (Va.) Times. Previously, she was a reporter for The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif., her CQ internship newspaper. She joins Marques Harper (Summer 1998) at the Roanoke newspaper.

Clifton Adcock (Spring 2004) is a reporter for the Great Falls (Mont.) Tribune. Previously, he was a reporter for the Muskogee (Okla.) Daily Phoenix and Times-Democrat. Adcock joins Rion Sanders (Summer 2003) at the Tribune.

Eliza Gutierrez

Eliza Gutierrez (Spring 2005) reports that her photo internship with The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post has turned into a full-time job. Says Gutierrez, “My internship here began in September. Since then I've been covering metro news as well as community news for (the) Neighorhood Post section, covering five …cities in southern Palm Beach County. I am being hired to cover community news. I also covered Hurricane Wilma last month.” She attributes the path to her new assignment to meeting Post photographer Gary Coronado, a Freedom Forum ASNE/APME Fellow who gave a presentation during Spring 2005 orientation. “Gary told me about the Fall internship at the Post. I applied while doing my Chips Quinn internship at the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore. Staff photographers in Salem helped me put together my portfolio, and one of the reporters checked over my cover letter for me. … I came to the Post after a Summer program at Poynter, and Gary Coronado has been my mentor here.”

From the 2005 Summer class… Angelica Herrera is an intern at The Chicago Reporter, a bimonthly investigative publication.

Dalton Walker will be a Summer 2006 intern at the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, Minn.

Hurricane Katrina… Sarah Broom (Summer 2000), editorial assistant at O, The Oprah Magazine, has a story in the December issue titled, “Cry Me A River.” A native of New Orleans, Broom writes about what it was like – in the days during and after Katrina -- living in Harlem, N.Y., waiting and worrying about her two missing brothers and watching on TV as her beloved city drowned.

Willie Allen (Spring 2002), photographer for the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times, is featured in his paper’s online presentation, “In Their Eyes, Stories of Hurricane Katrina.” Check it out at http://sptimes.com/2005/webspecials05/katrinaphotospecial/index.shtml

Other news… Meena Thiruvengadam (Summer 2003), business reporter for the San Antonio (Texas) Express-News, was interviewed on TV regarding holiday shopping. Check it out at http://www2.mysanantonio.com/multimedia/video/NewsOnDemand/index.cfm?videos=34173 (Scroll down to business and click more; then select Nov. 21 on the upcoming holiday shopping season.)

Rowena Vergara (Summer 2005), business reporter at the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star, shared with Colleen Fitzpatrick, her career coach, a Q&A with her that ran in her newspaper. ( http://www.rrstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051108/GTKM/111080018/1109) Occasionally the Register Star profiles a staffer in the Get to Know Me column, Rowena explains. This time she was featured.

Lawrence Brown (Summer 1992) writes that he is a freelance photographer in Chicago. Says Brown, “While I do primarily commercial work and model portfolios, my only published work to date was a photojournalistic shot which appeared in the July 26, 2004 edition of Jet Magazine. It was a shot of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan, and the late Winston Salem State University basketball coach, Clarence "Big House" Gaines.”

Ed Bowser and Javacia Harris

Engagements… Javacia Harris (Summer 2002) writes that she is engaged to fellow Chipster Edward Bowser (Summer 2001). Says Harris, “We're planning to get married April 8, 2006 in Louisville, Ky. Edward was an intern at The Courier-Journal and was hired out of his internship as a copy editor. I met him in 2002 when I was doing an internship at the C-J. So I guess in a way we owe our engagement to (Chips Quinn)!”
