NEW ORLEANS -- If we already didnt know how talented
the Chips Quinn alumni are, a trip to the 2003 American Society
of Newspaper Editors convention in New Orleans would prove
it.
Five Chipsters spent the week of April 6 in the Big Easy
working as reporters and photographers for the ASNE Reporter,
the student-produced convention newspaper.
"I love any opportunity to work with peers and professionals
and gain as much insight as possible on photography and journalism
as a whole," said Thomas, a photographer at The News-Star in
Monroe, La, and an ASNE/APME Fellow.
The Scholars covered an array of stories, from a speech
by Vice President Dick Cheney to conference workshops, from
the latest study on newsroom diversity to the festive culture
of New Orleans -- including jazz, food and voodoo.
They worked with veteran editors and reporters who volunteered
to serve as professional mentors and senior staff.
"I like the fact that I can work closely with some
great editors who are helping me to learn not only how to
write a good story, but also how to prepare for the future
as a young journalist," Rushing said.
Maple agreed. "Theyre taking their time to show
us what were doing right and what were doing
wrong."
After completing their weeklong assignments, they returned
home to new opportunities. Jimenez, a senior at the University
of Southern California, will graduate in May and take part
in a language program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, this Summer.
Maple, a junior at Southern University & A&M College
in Baton Rouge, La., returned to her duties as editor-in-chief
of the campus newspaper, The Southern Digest.
She will work as an intern this Summer at Newsday on
Long Island.
