Chips Achievement Prize: Bragging rights

The Chips Achievement Prize, appropriately known as CAP awards, was created in 1999 by John Quinn to recognize individual achievement. In John's words, the award allows Scholars to "brag a bit about their best work and get deserved recognition."

The work of past winners has shown that Scholars are bringing their special perspectives to their newsrooms and to their work. Scholars help real people tell their stories.

All Scholars are encouraged to submit an entry. A selected number of winners are named for each class. A small gift from the Freedom Forum accompanies the recognition.

Each Scholar may submit one work sample or a one-page essay reflecting his or her pride in a particular effort, such as:

  • a good reporting job under challenging circumstances
  • an outstanding writing effort
  • a strong headline (with sample) or editing exercise
  • a powerful photo, graphic or layout
  • an effective personal effort in dealing with issues with editors, colleagues or news sources

Entries should be submitted in an envelope marked "CAP entry" within a month of the end of an internship. Entries should be sent to:

Karen Catone
Director/Chips Quinn Scholars program
555 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.

A Scholar may submit only one entry.
