CAP Awards for Spring 2002

Posted: July 12, 2002

Winners of the Chips Achievement Prizes (CAP) for the Spring 2002 class:

Kristin M. Boyd for "Strong Hearts," a Valentine's Day story for the Lancaster (Pa.) New Era.

Ryan Divish for the story "Hoven youth finds healing in athletics" for the Aberdeen (S.D.) American News.

Monica Sagullo for the story titled "Oakland woman, 74, might be evicted for grandson's drug bust" in The Oakland Tribune.

Willie J. Allen Jr. for a series of photographs on the St. Francis Cathedral School for The Santa Fe New Mexican.

Judges' comment:

Kristin Boyd "Boyd did a wonderful job on this soft feature under pressure that was unexpected. She did such a nice job reporting that the reader was put in the living room with this elderly couple who celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary."

A nice image from her Page One story: While reminiscing about their life and love together, Tom takes moments to glance at Mary. Mary glances at Tom, grins and places her hand on his knee.

Ryan Divish  "Divish did a solid reporting job on this story about an athlete who overcame a life-threatening disease, Hyaline Membrane. His story was structured well, and the last four graphs in his ending wrap everything up with a little bow."

Monica Sagullo"Sagullo wrote a tight, clear story on an elderly woman who was caught unsuspecting in the system. This reporter had to understand some complicated legal issues before she could explain to her readers how this grandmother was going to be thrown out of her apartment. The woman's grandson was busted for using drugs in the house. New law said she was to be held accountable, even if she didn't know what he was doing."

Willie Allen "Allen's photography captured what the writer couldn't. It was done well technically, but it was done even better on content.  This photojournalist has a good eye. 'I am not satisfied with what I have,' Willie wrote in his cover letter. The entry, though, reflects his enthusiasm for 'taking an idea and creating the photos to match my thoughts.'"

Each winner receives the Magic Set of Mike Gartner Books -- books the Pulitzer Prize-winning editor says every journalist should read once a year: "Charlotte's Web," "The Careful Writer," "Growing Up," and "The Great Gatsby." All entrants receive certificates.
