| My First Job ...

Bill Church |
Bill Church, executive editor, Star-Gazette,
Elmira, N.Y.
I started as a sports writer at the Del City News,
a small weekly in Del City, Okla. I was barely four months
out of high school and juggling a full load of college classes.
Still, I remember it as more thrill than work. High-school
football is a big deal in Oklahoma, so the Del City Eagles
drew a lot of attention when they won the state title that
year. Later, I thanked the coach, Henry Manning, for treating
me the same way as the metro sports reporters who covered
the team through the playoffs. He gave me a wry, you've-got-to-be-kidding
look. "You got it right. I can't say that for others," he
said. "Besides, my wife likes you." It made me realize
that age has nothing to do with reputation. And connections
help.
