| My First Job ...

Caesar Andrews |
Caesar Andrews, editor, Gannett News Service, Washington,
D.C.
I started as a reporter for TODAY in Cocoa, Fla. I was with
family in Mobile, Ala., after just a few months on the job
when Hurricane Frederick struck the area. I was stranded,
unable to return to Brevard as scheduled. So I conferred with
the city desk and ended up covering Frederick from my hometown.
This was a breakthrough, a "wow" moment. I already was happy
to be a journalist but didn't necessarily dwell on building
a newsroom career. Chasing the hurricane story, especially
with the added independence and judgment expected when on
the road, turned up my enthusiasm. This was the start of me
thinking that journalism might be more than just a job for
the moment.
