Hosting a Chips Quinn Scholar

What we offer: Chips Quinn Scholars are journalism students of color with high potential. Scholars are required to attend a four-day orientation at the Freedom Forum, which includes training and preparation for their internships.

The Freedom Forum provides travel expenses for the interns to and from orientation and to and from the internship. The Freedom Forum also provides each intern a $500 housing stipend at the start of the internship and a $1,000 scholarship award at its successful completion. Scholars are responsible for their own housing and are required to provide their own transportation during the internship.

What we request from newspapers: A large part of the program's success comes from nurturing newsrooms and conscientious editors. We welcome any daily newspaper newsroom that is willing to offer challenging and educational internships for one or two Scholars. The internship should be a 10- to 12-week position in reporting, copy editing, photography, online or graphics arts that pays at least $500 a week for 2007.

We encourage newspapers to provide Scholars with a newsroom mentor, a one-month subscription to the newspaper before the internship and to help Scholars find housing. Toward the end of the internship, editors are asked to write an honest evaluation of each Scholar's work and potential.

The Chips Quinn Scholars program has a waiting list of daily newspaper newsrooms interested in participating. If you are interested in hosting a Chips Quinn Scholar, contact Karen Catone, program director, at 202-292-6271.
