Applying to be a Chips Quinn Scholar

Scholars are accepted into the program by nomination from journalism faculty and campus media advisers, editors of newspapers or leaders of minority journalism associations. College juniors, seniors or graduates with journalism majors or career goals in newspapers are eligible.

To nominate a student for the program, contact Director Karen Catone at 202-292-6271.

Nominees must complete an application and submit

  1. resume
  2. transcripts
  3. a half-dozen work samples
  4. two letters of recommendation
  5. a photograph
  6. an essay (of no more than two type-written pages) stating why they believe they should be Chips Quinn Scholars

Students may apply directly to the program, with letters of endorsement from editors or educators.

All nominees must have a valid driver's license and a car during their internship.

Program timetable

Spring program
Nomination deadline is Oct. 15. Orientation will be in mid-January, followed by a 10- to 12-week paid internship.

Summer program
Nomination deadline is Oct. 15. Placement notifications begin as early as mid-November and continue through the end of April. Orientation will be in mid-May, followed by a 10- to 12-week paid internship.
