A welcome from the founders Profile: Chips Quinn The Chips Quinn Spirit

As a thank you, we
share our secret

To the multitude of our thoughtful friends among
the far-flung Chips Quinn Scholars and
Freedom Forum colleagues…

Our anniversary celebration cup runneth over
with heart-warming words of congratulations on our 50-year anniversary.

Orientation is a family affair for the Quinns. John and Loie attend each orientation, and son R.B. Quinn (right), a teacher and lawyer, speaks to Scholars about the American press. Granddaughter Amelia Quinn Cellar introduced John during the Summer 2003 session.

And so, indeed, does our PO Box 173 in our tiny village post office at Carolina, R.I.

The good wishes and kind words just poured in…

--from all directions: Connecticut to California to Florida and all points in between;

--from all the CQS classes: the 1991 pioneers to this Summer 2003 class;

--from all points in the Freedom Forum world;

--from the humbling, but-to-be treasured comments from CQS alums from all of the years:

  • ”You are an inspiration on how to live a good, meaningful life.”
  • ”Thank you for helping make dreams come true.”
  • ”Your commitment to one another and to diversity in newsrooms is a tremendous inspiration to me and to other alums.”

--to the spirited youthful style of the Summer 2003 class:

  • ”You guys must really be good at this marriage thing because 50 years, man, is a long time!”

--to several flattering pleas for the formula for the 50 years of togetherness:

  • “Someday I hope you will share your secret.”

So we shall do just that as our thank you to all the kind folks who remembered us with so many great thoughts on our special day.

Here is the LoieandJohn (Note: it is one word) secret:

    The Lesson of Love was taught by John’s mother, Kathryn Collins Quinn,
    first to him even before he became a teen-age newsroom copy boy
    and then to Loie when she finally proposed to JCQ
    and became a devoted member of Kathryn’s loving family.
    Kathryn taught:
    “To truly love someone, you must care more about that person’s happiness and well-being
    than you do your own.”

LoieandJohn say “Amen” to that and hope that you do, too, and share in all the blessings that lesson can bring to your lives, as it has ours.

Thank you, everyone. And God Bless you all.
