Three Spring Scholars honored
for reporting, photography work

Special for chipsquinn.org

Posted: Aug. 19, 2005

Three Spring 2005 Scholars were named winners of Chips Achievement Prizes for outstanding work during their internships.

The winners were:

  • Kara Andrade, who was an intern at The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune, for a March news story on the shooting of a 16-year-old that stirred outrage and blame in the community.

Judges said of her story: “A fine job of community news reporting. The story also covered the underlying public safety issues in such a compelling way that this complex story was clear and simple and the issues were easy to understand.”

  • Rasha Madkour, The Spokesman Review, Spokane, Wash., for a feature on 97-year-old identical twins, Ethlyn and Kathleen DeCamp, who always have lived together.

Said the judges: “A well-organized and solid read. This lifestyle feature went above and beyond the routine, taking an assignment that had cliché-feature potential and making it something special and full of humanity.”

  • Anthony Dimaano of The Bulletin in Bend, Ore., for photos that accompanied a Community Life story on a fight club.

Judges’ comments: “Dean Guernsey, photography director at The Bulletin, summed up Dimaano's entry well: ‘Anthony Dimaano took an interesting subject and followed through by gaining the trust of the club members and going back to various locations where he was able to show our readers what goes on outside the ring. The end result (was) a comprehensive visual display that told the story graphically.’ ”

Judges for the CAP awards were Chips Quinn Director Karen Catone and Coaches Mary Ann Hogan and Dick Thien. CAP reporting honorees receive Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss (Gotham, 2004). Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs (edited by Cyma Rubin and Eric Newton; W. W. Norton & Company, 2003) is given to the photography winner. All winners receive a copy of President Kennedy Has Been Shot by the Newseum (Sourcebooks, 2003).
